I once helped a baby who was born with cystic fibrosis (a genetic lung disease). The parents asked me to come to the hospital on the day the baby was born and collect the baby’s stem cells from the placenta and fluid that surrounds the baby (called amniotic fluid). We then stored the stem cells in a freezer so that we could use them in the future to try and treat the lung disease. Hopefully one day we will find a cure for cystic fibrosis, and because we have stored the stem cells, this baby will be able to receive the treatment.
