The most common reason for a certain type of food making you sick is food allergies. Food allergies occur when your immune system makes a mistake. Normally, your immune system protects you from germs and disease. It does this by making antibodies that help you fight off bacteria, viruses, and other tiny organisms that can make you sick. But if you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly treats something in a certain food as if it’s really dangerous to you.

For the point of view of food poisoning and stomach bugs, there are lots of bacteria and viruses that can cause you to feel sick. For example, you can get Salmonella and Campylobacter from poultry and eggs, E. coli from meat as well as unwashed fruit and veg, and Vibrio and Aeromonas from fish and shellfish. Cooking your food well and washing your fruit and vegetables should get rid of most of these bacteria. Norovirus and rotavirus are the most common viruses that make you feel sick.
