Not really an easy one to say but perhaps as soon as people started migrating out of Africa they were scientists as they were discovering the world around them.

The ancient Greeks show the first recorded evidence of people pursuing scientific method, studying things like geometry and mathematical astronomy, biological processes, plants and animals, and theories of knowledge and learning. I agree with Laura, that humans probably developed ways to experiment very early in our evolution. This is why we are so successful a a species.

The Greeks used basic geometry and they’re understanding of the world to work out its circumference. They were incredibly accurate given the simplicity of their techniques. I just goes to show that you don’t have to be flashy to work out incredible things.
