I think that the best treatment I have helped develop is a cell therapy for babies that are born premature. When babies are born very early they have to be put on a ventilator to help them breathe. However, this can cause lung injury, which makes the baby sick even when they have grown up. We isolated stem cells from the babies placenta after they are born, and when we give the stem cells to the baby, we prevent the lung injury from happening. This is in clinical trials at the moment, so I hope it will one day help many babies stay healthy.
