When you magnify the surface of an object, a rough object will have a coarse or uneven surface, with many little projections that will catch your hand as you touch it. The smoother the object is the less projections it will have. For example, if you were to magnify velcro, you will find that it is really made up of millions of tiny hooks, designed to catch the surface of the second piece of velcro.
