Melancholy is just another word for depression or feeling sad. Most of the time it is caused by events that have made you feel sad. Sometimes they are a result of a chemical imbalance. Either way, there are many good treatments for melancholy – some of them involve talking to someone about what’s making you feel sad and some of them involve drugs that make you feel better or sort out the chemical imbalance.
In contemporary usage, melancholy is a mood disorder of non-specific depression, characterized by low levels of both enthusiasm and eagerness for activity.
