3D glasses use colour filters to trick you brain into thinking it is seeing a 3D image. With newer 3D glasses the left eye receives the all the colour information (amber filter) and the right eye eye sees only the blue parts (blue filter) of the image. The human brain ties both images together and sees it as a 3D image. Try and closing each eye next time you watch a movie in 3D.

I agree with Sean. Your brain does the hard work. It is more than one image being shown at the same time and fools your brain. Very cool effect, have you tried the new TVs? I saw one in a shop & was very impressed.

I went to a seminar last week that used the old two colour 3D glasses to show us some images of bacteria. It was really good but made my eyes go a bit weird for a while afterwards.
