With regard to television programmes please remember that they are fiction and dramas want to be as exciting as possible. I know some programmes use science that is based around reality but speed things up to make them look more dramatic. One program (I won’t mention any names) used superglue to make fingerprints visible which is done in reality however not as fast. Also the techniques can appear to be far more accurate than they normally are.

From my experience real life is a bit more dull! There is a lot of paperwork to fill in and tests that have to be repeated and analysed.
I think CSI is good to watch though!
