Current treatment for treating large skin wounds involve taking a section of healthy skin and stretching it to try and cover as much of the wound as possible. When the wound covers a very large area of skin, sometimes it is not possible to take such a large area of healthy skin without harming the patient. Our bioprinter uses only a very small sample of skin, and because we print individual skin cells we can cover a much larger area. We may not be able to cover an entire body, but it is a significant improvement over current methods.
Current treatments for skin wounds are simply taking a section of skin from a healthy site, stretching it, and placing it over the wound. Our method takes a small section of skin from a healthy site, then we grow up the skin cells in a laboratory, and then print the cells onto the wound. This means that we can cover a larger area of wound with a smaller amount of healthy skin.
