The smallest thing that has been ever discovered is Quark. It is subatomic particle and a subunit of proton and neutron. However, physics is progressing so rapidly, by the time I finish this answer scientists may have discovered even smaller things!

I had a dog and I called him Quark! He was a rescue dog that kept biting me. He was small but not as small as a real quark.
