This is something I think about quite a lot… We’ve come so far and at the same time some of our attitudes seems so backward. A lot of people are selfish, driven by money and don’t really seem to worry about the future and the legacy we will leave to our children and grandchildren. It’s likely that the human race will come up against hardship at some point, whether it be as a result of climate change, disease, lack of resources, or war… And then there is also the possibility of natural disasters, Earthly or not. Looking over evolutionary time, few species have survived for a very long time. Sorry to get dark, but I think ultimately we’ll become extinct. When this might happen is anybody’s guess.

Very good question. The short answer is yes. Over time all empires will fall and all great leaders will be forgotten. However, our achievements may survive and this is the hope that I have for our species. While people one day may not remember who invented antibiotics, the scientific progress that we have achieved due to this discovery will continue to help develop even more treatments, and continue like this. I hope.

We hope science is not based on human vanity but human curiosity!
